We caught up with Deejay Young, the 20 year old R&B singer from Tampa. You can commonly catch Young on his Youtube Channel . The R&B singers was able to catch up with us and explain his direction.
Whats good in Tampa right now?
Tampa is flourishing with the Rap/Hip-Hop scene right now, seems like that’s what most want to do here. There’s a lot of “jook” and “dance” music here. I’m really trying to set myself out on the R&B/Soul Scene.
Biggest influence outside of music?
My biggest influence outside of music is definately Film and Art. I’ve always heard a picture is worth a thousand words and its so true. I love film, and it tells a story, just like a painting or any work of visual art.
What got you into R&B?
What really got me into R&B music was seeing the ones who came before me like Luther Vandross, and Marvin Gaye singing from the soul and painting a vivid picture of music with words from the heart. Seeing the lives they touched made me want to be apart of that as well.
If you could do a song with one artist who would it be?
If I could do a song with one artist right now, it would probably be Beyonce. I love her artistry and everything she does. She doesn’t put her sound in a box, she explores every boundary. If not Beyonce, then Fantasia. She let’s it all go on stage and in the booth, I love it!
Favorite aspect of the music industry?
My favorite aspect of the music industry would be the ability to touch so many people through your own voice.
What are you listening to right now?
Right now I’m listening to Chrisette Michele’s “Epiphany” album.
What are you working on?
Right now I’m working on writing work for a new music group that I’m apart of called “City Groove”. We’re a Jazz/R&B/Soul band comprised of musicians, I’m the lead singer. Our project will be released very soon, and I’m excited to be apart of this project. Be on the look out for us!
Where do you see yourself in 2 years?
In two years, I see myself happy and successful in my endeavors, and more accomplished than I was 2 years before.
If you could describe your music in one word, what would it be?
If I could describe my music in one word, it would be “Real”. Everything I sing or write about is from the heart, or a lesson learned.
