Is “Detox” More than a Rumor?

Speculation concerning Dr. Dre’s third album, “Detox” has been echoed through hip-hop blogs and magazines since 2002. The truth is, not much is to be known of Dre’s upcoming release due to the only available information offered on it being hearsay. However, some people in Dre’s inner circle have spoken out on “Detox.” Still, its uncertain how many songs will be on the album, which artists will be featured on the album, when the album will be released, and most importantly, how the album will sound.

How many songs? When rumors were first afloat concerning “Detox”, DJ Quik, and Aftermath producer Mel-Man both stated that Dr. Dre had been working on hundreds of beats and songs for “Detox.” Dre’s numbers in an interview with Power 106 Radio in 2007 were a bit more shallow. Dre stated that he had completed 18 tracks for his upcoming album, but the final version would only have 12-13 tracks.

Who’ll be on it? 50 Cent has already stated that he’s recorded two songs for “Detox.” Others that are rumored to be featured on the album are Eminem, The Game, Guvner, Knoc-turn’al, Lloyd Banks, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Devin the Dude, Busta Rhymes, Jay-, Warren G, Lil Wayne, Nas, Ice Cube, and Fergie.

What will it sound like? Dre stated in an interview in 2002 with MTV News that he’s, “not talking about lowriders and blunts and all that anymore” and that “Detox” would be a concept album chronicling one man’s life, a “hip-hop musical.” Since then, Dre has placed much of the emphasis concerning the sound of the album on it’s innovative new sound promising an “entirely new thing going with the drums that’s incredible.” Producers that have been thought to be working with Dre on “Detox” are J.R. Rotem, Dawaun Parker, Hi-Tek, DJ Khalil, Focus, Rza, and Mel-Man.

When will “Detox” be released? Good Question. Work for “Detox” started in 2004 with an initial release date for fall of 2005. It’s been seven years since Dre released his second album – which was released 9 years after his first album. There is hope, Dre stated in August that the album is finished and that he’s “shooting for a November or December release.” With December right around the corner, one can only wonder.
