Grammy award winning singer Wyclef Jean recently stated that he was qualified to run for Haiti’s Presidential position. Now, he’s taking action. Jean was in Haiti today having his fingerprints put on file by the judicial police, a necessary legal process needed to be done before a presidential race. Jean told Reuters:
I basically come out to Haiti today because it was important that I do my fingerprints…There are a lot of rumors that I am running for president. I have not declared that…If we decide to move forward, I am pretty sure that we have all our paperwork straight.
Jean’s financial status has scared away and threatened his opposition. His public sercive record however remains immaculate. From the man who released the single, “If I Was President” two years ago, the 37 year old idealist takes a step closer to implementing the change he’s been singing about.
Update 8/4/10 by MOVA:
Haitian-American singer, Wyclef Jean, is planning on announcing today on CNN’s “Larry King Live” that he will be running for president of Haiti. Born in a small village in Port-au-Prince Wyclef moved his family to Brooklyn when he was nine.
None of us reading this will ever forget what happened recently in Haiti with the earthquake. The Haitian government reported that 230,000 people had died, 300,000 had been injured and 1,000,000 made homeless as a result the January 12th earthquake. With current president Rene Preval serving his maximum allotted second five year sentence there is going to be new president starting in February of 2011.
I think Wyclef has a good shot at winning this election considering that Rene Preval took over 51% (992,766 votes) of the votes in the 2006 and the next closest was Leslie Manigat at 12%(240,306). Obviously this is a very important election for Haiti is still and will be in a rebuilding phase for the next several years because of this massive earthquake. Through the Yele Haiti Foundation Wyclef has raised over 3 million dollars to aid in the relief and he was one of the first to contribute after the earthquake took place.
Although he has no experience in politics we can get a brief idea as to what he planning on doing through the lyrics to his song “If I was President.” Personally I have always liked Wyclef music back from everything he did with The Fugees to his recently successful solo career. I think that he wins this election by a landslide, 60% of the votes. Peace.
