These guys came close to breaking through a barrier that hasn’t been touched since the unique innovative rock of Led Zepplin. Unfortunately, C&C fell short of that barrier. However, I still need to give them some props. After unleashing an unbelievable freshman album, these guys were deemed the band to watch by credible magazines like Rolling Stone. With so much hoopla, hype, and attention, it would have been easy for the New Yorkers to unleash a poppy radio ready album that would ensure MTV success. Instead of selling out, they stuck to their persona and unleashed the far from poppy “In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3”.
The album is the second installment of a promised Quadrilogy (if u may) of albums to come out by the prog rockers known as Coheed and Cambria . Within the quadrilogy, the front man Claudio Sanchez tells his dark comic book like tale of the two characters “Coheed and Cambria” (Yes, that’s were they got their name). Within the story we experience the two characters live and die. The concept album is very unique, which is great. However you might assume that a progressive rock band would progress through out their albums; unfortunately this new album is huge regression from the first. As the band carries on unnecessarily long songs, with an overwhelming distortion on guitar; it is very easy to get distracted. The album opens with a phone ringing (getting started right where they left off from their first album) and then a long instrumental opener that carries on way.way to long. While it does set the mood and gets the listener ready for another adventure with Coheed and Cambria , it is all to overdone. Songs like “Blood Red Summer” save the falling album with catchy lyrics, and the always fun hard claps. Other notable songs include “The Velorium Camper I: Faint of Hearts”, and “A Favor House Atlantic”. They both display insanely catchy vocals along with energy that is tough to match. All in all, the album is not bad at all, it is just disappointing. C&C set out to create an extremely innovative and groundbreaking album that would push the musical envelope much like their influence Led Zepplin. Unfortunately, these guys fell way short of anything Led Zepplin ever produced, but hey, you can’t blame a guy for trying.
