The rise of rapper Chief Keef, a south side of Chicago native, has been nothing short of remarkable. The 16 year old, whose real name is Keith Cozart, has gone from relative obscurity to being the most buzzed about young rapper in a matter of months. Keef quickly gained a local following after releasing several videos on youtube that were, in turn, readily shared on Facebook and Twitter. These videos became immediate hits in the local high schools and on hip hop blogs. The video for the hit “I Don’t Like” has been viewed almost 4 million times since it went online in March. Most recently, Chief Keef has been thrust on to the national scene after Kanye West decided to remix “I Don’t Like”, with help from Jadakiss, Pusha T, and Big Sean. Now Keef has become the most sought after rapper in the industry with heavyweights like Birdman of Cash Money Records vowing to “to do whatever it takes” to sign him to his label. Rumor has it he has been in talks with Playboy about doing a fashion spread with the likes of Wiz Khalifa and A$AP Rock for the January 2013 edition (You heard it here first). Not bad for a kid who still lives with his grandma and is coming off house arrest for allegedly pointing a gun at a Chicago police officer.
His music is both raw and real; detailing the everyday lives of these young south siders. Keef raps about his love of good weed, contempt for fake dudes, and strict adherence to never snitching. He does this over banging beats produced by fellow Chicagoan Young Chop, who recently inked a deal with Warner Bros. Haters can hate all they want but unfortunately for them they are going to have to get used to hearing a lot from young Chief Keef. BANG BANG
