The cast is reminiscent of a bygone era: Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Terry Crews, Randy Coutoure, Bruce Willis, Arnold Shwarzenegger. Dexter’s, Eric Roberts joins them in 2010’s action film of the year, “The Expendables.” The movie was extremely fulfilling. Not only was it extremely entertaining, with shoot-out scenes and explosions of epic proportion, but it was hilarious in the comedic relief which was flowing naturally among the main characters.
The mercenary crew is first hired to free a group of sailors in Somalia, whom were taken hostage by pirates. After this, their next mission is to bring down the dictator of a Caribbean island-nation. Naturally, theres a woman living on the island involved who needs to be saved. Stallone and the rest of the crew work to deal with both objectives, each bad-ass dealing with it in their own way.
Mickey Rourke is a great staple in the movie – playing the old, wiser Expendable whom gives advice from his own troubled experience. Bruce Willis and Arnold Shwarzenegger appear in a scene which seems to be created solely for an amazing double-cameo. The one-liners shine in this scene as well as the rest of the movie. Each character seems natural, slowly throwing out their comedic one-liners, attesting to themselves.
There are parts that somewhat seem like the latest Rambo, but then you are bombarded with knife fighting, wrestling moves, people slamming people into the ground/walls and then it seems something like Donkey Kong. Overall, “The Expendables” is Contra with a simple and classic plot which never disappoints, a cast of numerous stars from the 80’s, and action and comedy that will keep you entertained. I still can’t believe Sly wrote, produced and directed this movie. It had me clapping in the theater at one moment- I’m not someone who usually does that. See it!
