With Mad Men season 4 premiere last Sunday I cannot help but think about Don Draper and his colleagues favorite drink, Old Fashions. Don drinks them from 9am till bed time so one day I decided to do a little investigation on the drinks. It turns out that the drinks have a lot of history.
Old Fashions are commonly known as being the first cocktail ever! That right ever! We know this because someone wrote The Balance and Columbia Repository located in New York on the May 6, 1806 and the editor responded back by saying a cocktail was a potent concoction of spirits, bitters, water, and sugar: a kind of bittered sling. The first Old Fashion was a bourbon drink that were served at the Pendennis Club, a gentlemen’s club in Louisville, Kentucky.
What you need:
Bourbon whiskey, Angostrura bitters, Water, Sugar, Cherry, and Orange
2 oz bourbon whiskey
2 dashes Angostura® bitters
1 splash water
1 tsp sugar
1 maraschino cherry
1 orange wedge
