We caught up with DeMar Hamilton, drummer of Plain White T’s.
So where did it all begin, when and where did you guys begin playing together?
The Plain White T’s started in 97′ after Tom and Dave graduated high school. The band first started as a cover band covering songs by Weezer and Pearl Jam. As the years progressed the band started writing their own songs and making records. A couple members quit and new members joined.
What music or artists influenced you guys?
We’re pretty much influenced by most artists we tour with or are very good friends with. But, we are strongly influenced by bands like the Beatles, The Strokes, Weezer, and Tom Petty.
Who could we find in your CD players?
Right now you could find the new Strokes album. Maybe some Nada Surf ya know lots of stuff.
Where could we find Plain White T’s biggest fans?
Chicago! Where else? Maybe in California as well.
Do you think the Chicago music scene is finally getting the recognition that it deserves?
I don’t ever think Chicago wasn’t getting the recognition it deserved. There has always been great bands coming out of Chicago like the Smoking Popes, Smashing Pumpkins, Wilco, or Alkaline Trio. Chicago in my opinion has always had a great music scene. Now there’s just a lot of smaller bands from Chicago who are taking off and i think that’s great because we are one of them.
What is the funniest/craziest story that has taken place on your most recent tour?
This question comes up so often and i never know how to answer it because nothing too crazy or funny ever really happens. But one time I got drunk and passed out in the hotel lobby. Is that crazy?
